Below is a statement issued  by Voice of America:

Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has called on Burma's military government to release opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest.

The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs said Friday that President Arroyo made the appeal during a meeting with Burmese Prime Minister Thein Sein last week [April 2009] in Thailand. Both leaders were there for a regional summit.

Aung San Suu Kyi has spent much of the past 19 years under house arrest, and the Philippine president said freeing her would create "tremendous goodwill" for Burma internationally.

The Philippine Foreign Affairs Department said the Burmese prime minister promised to take Ms. Arroyo's comments into account.
