Southern Cameroons: SCNC Members Detained

The arrest and detention of nineteen activists demonstrates the atmosphere in which the Southern Cameroons National Council must work.

Below is an article published by UNPO based on information provided by the South Cameroons National Council (SCNC):

Nineteen members of the Southern Cameroons National Council (SCNC) were arrested and detained by armed police of the Republic of Cameroon on 9 February 2008, a press release from the SCNC states. 

The nineteen SCNC members were gathered at in a private residence for a meeting when armed police carried out the arrests.

Details of the reason behind the arrests has still to emerge from the Cameroonian authorities, but the nineteen detained SCNC representatives remain behind bars and access to them has not been granted to the SCNC Northern Zone chairman, Prince Mbinglo Humphrey.

Those detained are:

1.  Chinkwo Fidelis Ndeh (62), SCNC National Assistant organizing secretary 

2.  Muma Emmanuel Suh (60), SCNC Mezam County Chairman

3.  Ndimungori Zacchaeous Ndeh (54), Mankon L.G.A. Chairman

4.  Ngwa Benedict Fuh (70), SCNC representative

5.  Nkwenti Peter Shu (50), SCNC representative

6.  Che Christian (35), SCNC representative

7.  Nji Martin Minang (39), SCNC representative

8.  Chi Samuel (40),SCNC representative

9.  Richard Nji (37), SCNC representative

10.  Fru Peter (52), SCNC representative

11.  Atumko Fruasanga Cyprian (57), SCNC representative

12.  Fontowah Nde Pierre (56),SCNC representative

13.  Nicolas Ndinge (73), SCNC representative

14.  Fru Chungong Christopher (59), SCNC representative

15.  Forbanjong Michael Ndenge (56), SCNC representative

16.  Peter Tumafor (66), SCNC representative

As with all other UNPO members, the SCNC subscribe to the values of nonviolence and tolerance in their desire to gain for the Southern Cameroons greater administrative freedom and influence over local affairs. 

Consequently, UNPO calls upon the Cameroonian authorities to justify the arrests and release the detained activists immediately.
