In an important step towards national recognition of past injustices to Australian Aboriginals, Tasmania has compensated its “stolen generation”.
Below is an article published by Radio Netherlands:
The Australian state of Tasmania will pay compensation to Aboriginals who were forcibly taken from their parents as children. Australia's central government has refused to compensate the group, known as the "stolen generation".
Tasmania will give the 100 plus claimants handouts worth about three million euros. Tasmanian Premier Paul Lennon called the money "symbolic recognition" of the children's pain and suffering.
Up until the 1970s, the Australia government removed thousands of Aboriginal children from their homes. Under the policy, designed to improve the integration of the Aboriginal community, the children were placed in foster or care homes. |
