A state of emergency has been declared after fires spiral out of control, destroying the local environment and threatening the livelihood of residents

A state of emergency was declared in Tuva on September 4 [2007]. Tuvan head Sholban Kara-ool announced it in his official statement to the citizens of Tuva. $235,000 was allocated from the reserve fund for forest fire extinguishing.

The republican government made a decision to declare the state of emergency in Tuva on the basis of the law "About protection of population and area from emergency situations caused by natural and technogeneous disasters". 36 forest fires, 1,834 hectares in area, including two big fires, more than 300 hectares in area each, have broken out in Tuva for five days. Forests are on fire in Kaa-Khemsky, Tandynsky, Todzhinsky, Ulug-Khemsky, Piy-Khemsky, and Chedi-Kholsky Districts.

Apart from the forests, steppes, which are close to inhabited areas, are on fire. Financial damage caused by forest fires has reached more than $430,000.

The situation is complicated with dry and hot weather. No rains are forecast for the nearest days.
