UNPO: “Minorities Need a Voice at the UN!”
Sunday, 02 September 2007

UNPO ‘supports’ an initiative by ‘Minority Rights Group International’ aimed at raising support for the continuance of the mandate of the UN Working Group on Minorities, which will be reviewed at the upcoming session of the UN Human Rights Council.

The Hague, 3 September 2007 – The UN Human Rights Council (HRC) will convene for its 6th session from 10 to 28 September in Geneva, Switzerland. During the second week (19 September 2007), the UN Human Rights Council will discuss the future of the Working Group on Minorities. If the HRC decides to terminate its existence, it will mean the end of one of the few forums specifically dedicated to give minorities a chance to voice their concerns on the international level. In order to raise awareness and gain support for the work of the Working Group on Minorities, ‘Minority Rights Group International’ has launched a campaign and has opened up a petition for the preservation of the Working Group on Minorities.
