Wednesday, 25 July 2007

The Food and Agriculture Organization has signed and committed itself to help develop Chechen agriculture and help raise living standards in the region’s rural areas.

Below are extracts from an article published by Regnum:

The United Nations will assist Chechnya in developing its agriculture […]. According to the source, the agreement was reached by head of the Department for Foreign Affairs of the Administration of the Chechen President and the Government Ramzan Lechkhadzhiyev, FAO Emergency Coordinator for the North Caucasus Winston Rudder and FAO Officer Farukh Tairov at their meeting in Grozny, Chechnya, yesterday.

“The sides agreed it is necessary to come from sending food assistance to assistance in starting production of foodstuffs and increasing living standards of residents of rural areas in the republic,” the press office informed.

According to Winston Rudder, implementation of local projects of the UN FAO must promote improvement of agricultural policy of the republic governmental institutions.

The UN food and agriculture program has been active in Chechnya since 2003 by carrying out projects in forestry, fishery and agriculture.
