Following a referendum which confirmed President Basescu, Hungarian Democratic leader Marko Bela announced yesterday that he would leave the Romanian government.

Hungarian Democrats (UDMR) leader Marko Bela said on Thursday [21 June 2007] that he would resign as a member of the Romanian government minister on July 3, three days later than he had previously announced.

Bela, whose party represents the Hungarian minority in Romania, had first announced his resignation last month, shortly after a referendum where President Traian Basescu, whom UDMR opposed, was re-confirmed on office.

He said in a press conference today [21 June 2007] that he would resign as state minister in charge with cultural, education and European integration issues.

He said he recalled the date because he would be out of Bucharest on June 30, the date he first mentioned a month ago. At the time, Bela motivated his gesture explaining that he wanted to deal more with the issues his Party is going through.

Given the current political instability in Romania, the ethnic Hungarian party, Hungarian Minority's Democratic Union (UDMR), increased its relevancy in terms of its Parliamentary support for the current government.
