Tatarstan: President Wins King Faisal International Prize

RIYADH -- Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, governor of Saudi Arabia's Aseer region and chairman of King Faisal International Prize's Foundation, said Saturday President of the Republic of Tatarstan Mintimer Sharipovich Shaimiev would be honored for his service to Islam.

Prince Khaled said in a statement the selection of Shaimiev would be awarded with King Faisal international prize for his service of Islam.

The president of Tatarstan, he added, has been working to revive the Islamic culture in his country and in teaching his fellow citizens with principles of Islam, in addition to the construction of mosques, whose number exceeds 1,000, of which 40 are in the capital, said Prince Khaled.

During his tenure, Shaimiev established print shops to print the Holy Quran, Islamic books, built schools and Islamic societies, as well as the Russian Islamic University, he added.
