UNPO Appeals against Imprisonment of Tibetan Writer
Wednesday, 06 September 2006

Mr. Dolma Kyab (Chinese: Zhou Shique), a 29 year old Tibetan writer, was detained in March 2005 on what has been said to be charges of 'endangering state security'. He was subsequently convicted in a closed trial and is currently serving a 10 year prison term. Mr. Kyab, worked as a writer and history teacher in Lhasa, and was working on a book manuscript titled The Restless Himalayas, in which he writes about Tibet's geography, history and religion.

Official details of charges against him are not known. According to information received by the International Campaign for Tibet (ICT), Mr. Dolma Kyab has been denied a fair trial, and has been left with no legal recourse.

UNPO, sharing the concerns of ICT, hereby strongly urges the Minister of Justice of the People's Republic of China to take action and intervene on the following recommendations:

to ensure the release of unjustly imprisoned Dolma Kyab; and

to end unjust political persecution and provide fair trials in adherence with international standards.
