Help Europe Keep the Embargo on Arms Sales to China |

The European Union is considering lifting its embargo on arms
exports to the People's Republic of China that it imposed in response to the
Tiananmen massacre of 1989. The lifting of the ban is supported by Austria,
France, Germany, Italy and Spain, while the Governments of the United Kingdom
and Netherlands want to keep the embargo.
Despite the promises during its 2008 Olympics candidacy, the
Beijing regime continues to grossly violate the human rights of the people of mainland
China, Tibet and East Turkestan. It also threatens international security with ongoing threats
against Taiwan. It refuses to finalize the ratification process of the International
Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Lifting of the arms embargo would
be particularly cynical act this year, as we commemorate this year the 45th anniversary of
the Tibetan uprising and the 15th anniversary of the Tiananmen protests, both
brutally crushed by the same army that the EU might soon be equipping with weapons.
