The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO),
along with other organizations and foundations in the Netherlands, will participate
in the Earth Day festival held in Rhenen, the Netherlands, from 21 until 23
April 2006. UNPO will put its activities on display and inform visitors also
about member nations and peoples. Focal points are cultural diversity, environment
and human rights issues.
The three-day festival is a global event held to raise awareness
and concern for the earth and its environment. It is organized by Stichting
Dag van de Aarde, a Dutch-based non-profit NGO, which has as its main goals
to bring together and foster cooperation between different organizations and
groups to promote awareness and effectively disseminate information relating
to the earth and mankind’s interaction with it. “The Earth
as Home to All of Us” will be this year’s main theme.
The first Earth Day festival was held in the United States
on 22 April 1970. Since then, Earth Day has evolved into a global manifestation
of a special day in which people worldwide are urged to focus their attention
on the current challenges facing our planet. Earth Day signifies a day to remind
every person of his/her and fellow human beings’ equal right to the earth
as a global home, whilst simultaneously emphasizing the equal responsibility
of each person to preserve the environment and improve living conditions worldwide.
Earth Day 2006 will launch a sustained, three-year campaign to educate consumers,
corporations and governments worldwide on the urgent need to take concrete steps
on climate problems.
UNPO will participate at the Earth Day festival to raise awareness
of the organization and its Members amongst the Dutch population. With thousands
of expected visitors, the event represents a significant occasion for UNPO to
emphasize the unique and intimate connection many UNPO Members have to their
land and environment. This also reflects one of the UNPO core principles enshrined
in its Covenant, the “protection of the natural environment”.
In addition to hosting the UNPO stand and informing visitors,
the element giving UNPO the real acte de presence will be the intense and fascinating
dance performances by the South Moluccan and Southern Cameroonian performers.
UNPO looks forward to seeing you at the Earth Day Festival
2006!
