UN Commission on Human Rights Suspended Again
Sunday, 19 March 2006
Geneva, 20 March - The Expanded Bureau of the 62nd session of the Commission on Human Rights met this morning and announced that the Commission will reconvene in the afternoon of Monday 27 March 2006. This new suspension is intended to allow members of the Bureau to continue discussions towards consensus regarding the adoption of the agenda of the 62nd session.

Furthermore, following the UN General Assembly’s adoption last week of Resolution A/60/251 to create a Human Rights Council, an ECOSOC resolution relating to the termination of the work of the Commission is awaited. Chairman Rodriguez Cuadros informed this morning that corresponding to the GA Resolution establishing the Human Rights Council, the Commission is currently awaiting an ECOSOC Resolution providing substantive elements for the format and the nature of the final session of the Commission on Human Rights.

The session may last for up to two weeks, but many believe it will be a substantially shortened session, possibly cut down to a couple of days. Whereas the Expanded Bureau has been discussing the agenda for a shortened 62nd Session, it has thus far not reached agreement on this matter. Please consult the UNPO website for further information in the coming period.
