The Permanent Mission of the People's Republic of China to
the UN Office in Geneva, in a Diplomatic Note to the Office of the High Commissioner
for Human Rights (OHCHR), and the Secretariat of the WCAR, dated 7 February
2001, forwarded the following comments on the UNPO:
We welcome the application of the UNPO to participate in the
WCAR and hope it could contribute to the success of the Conference as well as
world combat against racism. While applying to attend such an important international
gathering as the Conference, UNPO enjoys no consultative status with ECOSOC.
The Chinese government hopes that UNPO could abide by the purpose and principles
of the Charter of the United Nations when conducting its activities, no matter
prior to, during, or even after the Conference, as the other non-governmental
organizations with ECOSOC consultative status.
Comment: The Secretariat is delighted by China's direct interest
in UNPO activities. After all, China is a Permanent Member of the UN Security
Council. We welcome China's comments and assure its government of our best intentions
to abide by the UN Charter principles. In fact, since its founding in 1991,
the UNPO has strived for the protection and promotion of fundamental rights
wherever these rights are violated by oppressive governments. |
