Tuesday 22 March representatives from Cabinda met with officials at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) at Palais Wilson, Geneva. During the UNPO-facilitated meeting, matters related to the current human rights situation in Cabinda were discussed, with a particular emphasis on civil and political rights violations.

In relation to the special procedures of the Commission on Human Rights, the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General on human rights defenders, Ms. Hina Jilani, included in her recent mission report to Angola, several comments on the situation of the Cabinda province. This report informed parts of the discussion held between the representatives from Cabinda and two of the assistants of the Special Representative on the issue of human rights defenders.

The Cabindan delegation continues to work to raise awareness of human rights violations taking place in the conflict-ridden province, and perceives the above meeting to represent an important step in drawing attention to the largely forgotten conflict on the west coast of central Africa.
