Vhavenda: Ethnic-Based Discrimination is Racism
Tuesday, 22 February 2005

Article 1 of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination provides that the term "racial discrimination" shall mean any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on race, colour, descent, or national or ethnic origin which has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing,of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural, or any other field of public life.

South Africa is a heterogeneous society that has eleven language groups. These groups have different cultures, customs, and traditions and they also cherish diverse political ideals and therefore are not a homogeneous entity that could simply be downtrodden in this manner. It needs not to be overemphasised that those groups have different political preferences in terms of ideological orientation and governance style. They do share common continental abode { i.e. Africa } but not common identity and nationality in the true sense of the word.

Heterogeneity and Unitary Government

According to our knowledge a unitary form of government is best suited to a homogeneous society and not in a society characterised by deep cleavages. It is, according to us, very dangerous to try and willy-nilly homogenise diversity and believe that everything will run smoothly under one despotic and ethnocentric regime.Unitarism in a diverse society breeds ethnocide and therefore causes political, social, economic and cultural problems of greatest magnitude. If, for instance, one or two ethnic groups are underrepresented or unrepresented, then you find a situation where such groups deploy less or no power to such an extent that they are effectively excluded from decision-making structures and therefore are at the mercy of the powers that be.Now here is a problematic situation, decision-making structures shall take decisions as they wish, regardless of whether such decisions are at odds with your culture, religion, customs, tradition political preferences etc, and differentiated treatment of ethnic groups begins at this very point, hence racism. The international community was not aware of this kind of racism that is taking place in South Africa because it was concealled by hook or crook.

Political Parties in South Africa

Political parties in this country have a tendency of parading as catch-all parties and each party claims to represent the interests of people from all walks of life.I do not believe that a single and ethnocentric political party could effectively represents the interests of all the people from different ethnic groups because this element of ethnocentrism will pose a problem.

Buzz-words during the euphoria period and also at the beginning of black rule in South Africa somewhere in the mid 90's were Democracy, transparency, moral regeneration, human rights, tolerance, better life, etc. At this point in time almost nothing is happening that augers well with those buzzwords in this country.

The current political scenario reminds me of historical events that took place in Italy somewhere during the middle ages when Ostrogoths and others invaded Rome and destroyed everything connected to civilisation, and the period was known as the Dark Ages.

If one could ask a question related to the misdeeds that are taking place in this country I would respond by listing the following: Scandals, heists, moonlighting, racketeering, skulduggery, muzzling, one-party state drive, racism,ethnic-based discrimination, smear campaigns, framing, ethnocentrism, distortion of the meaning of democracy, misgovernance, selfish interests, rapes, moral degeneration and decay, crime and more crime.

Independent Electoral Commission could better be known as Dependent Electoral Commission because of too much manipulation and meddling.
