As reported in Mtavari Gazeti, Georgian-Abkhaz negotiations were held in Sochi under the aegis of the United Nations. The negotiations took place against a background of exchanged accusations concerning the issue of the return of refugees to the Gali region. The Abkhaz are always irritated by the return of Georgian refugees to Abkhazia.
The Abkhaz side blamed the Georgian delegation for failing to prepare for the issue, as well as for giving it an extreme political slant. Vladislav Ardzinba's adviser Astamur Tania told journalists that the Georgian side is not ready yet to resolve the problem of refugees' registration and adaptation without a political context. "We are maximally trying to avoid acute political issues in the negotiations which cause confrontation," Tania said.
However, Speaker of the Abkhaz Parliament Nugzar Ashuba is not reluctant to avoid confrontation. He recently announced at a meeting with the Marshal 'Transitive Democracy' Fund that "Abkhazia is an independent state and it will not deviate from its policy."
