On Sunday, January 4, 2009, Senator John Nimrod, former Illinois State Senator, former Secretary General of the Assyrian Universal Alliance and Chairperson of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization General Assembly, passed away at the age of 86.


Nimrod, a beloved leader of the Assyrian Christian Community worldwide was known as “Senator”, long after he had retired from the Illinois Senate.

Nimrod, served for 11 years as the Secretary General of the Assyrian Universal Alliance, an umbrella organization representing the Assyrian Christian Community worldwide.

Known for dogged support of the Assyrian Nation, he travelled tirelessly throughout the world for the establishment of an Assyrian Nation in the homeland of the Assyrian People in Northern Iraq.

Nimrod also [chaired] the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization General Assembly, an organization representing peoples of the world without countries for many years.

Known as a strong advocate for his cause, he was also known as a passionate Christian who saw the Christian Faith of the Assyrians, the first Christian Nation in history as their greatest strength.

Fearless, passionate, but loving, he traveled the world until illness slowed him down helping the worldwide Assyrian Christian Community through countless assistance, educational and relief projects.

Following the Liberation of Iraq, Nimrod traveled to newly freed Baghdad with one of the first Assyrian delegations to enter the country.
