‘Change Has Come to America’

Obama’s Time Has Come – UNPO Welcomes the New American President!

Today, on November 5 2008, UNPO congratulates American voters on the election of Barack Obama as President of the United States of America.

It is surely a historic day, as the world sees the election of the first African-American as President of the United States of America.  Racial barriers have been smashed in an election that has captured the imagination of the world.  Those who said that race would, in the end of the day, be an insurmountable issue have been proven wrong.  The election of Barack Obama reveals the soul of America.

With an economic crisis, a war on two fronts and the task of repairing the American reputation worldwide – Obama does not have an easy job ahead.  Time will tell whether he can fulfil the hope that he has inspired – but his election alone speaks volumes. It speaks volumes of equality, fairness, opportunity and possibility.

Obama has pledged to become an agent of change. ‘Change has come to America’ he told his audience in his victory speech.  This breath of fresh air that Obama has brought will influence world change. With this change comes hope.

UNPO hopes that the new administration will prove an ally in its goal to improve the situation of minorities in the world – marginalised and often forgotten people. Under Barack Obama’s leadership, America has the opportunity to become a champion of human rights in the world instead of an abuser of human rights.  His promise to close Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp will set the tone.  This abolishment of this symbol of injustice can signify a new beginning.

The election of Barack Obama is one of the great political events of our lives.  The possibility for effective, positive change is immense.

The world waits.
