Afrikaner: Deadline Looms For Street Name Changes

Sample ImageThe Freedom Front Plus have filed papers opposing plans by City of Tshwane (Pretoria) authorities to change historic street names in the city.

Below is an article issued by the South African Press Association and published by Independent On-line:

Pretoria residents have until Friday [31 October 2008] to make submissions on proposed changes to street names, said the City of Tshwane.

In a statement on Wednesday [29 October 2008], the city reminded residents of their "critical input" in the name change process.

The city announced last month that 27 street names in and around Pretoria would be renamed following consultations with residents.

"The intention of the process is to undertake a comprehensive reconstruction and transformation of the image of the City which will create a new African Capital City, reflective of a common heritage and identity," it said.

The city said all input from residents would be presented to the Public Place and Street Names Committee, which would then make recommendations to the council.

On Monday [27 October 2008], the Freedom Front Plus with the support of AfriForum and the Afrikaans Cultural Associations filed papers in the Pretoria High Court opposing the renaming of the streets.
