Southern Azerbaijan: Activist Arrested

Political activist and UNPO Member Representative Mr. Musevi has been detained by Azerbaijani authorities, with his extradition to Iran expected today, where he could face criminal charges for his activism.

Below is an article published by Azeri-Press Agency:

“Hadi Seyid Javad Musevi, one of the activists of Southern Azerbaijan National Awakening Movement, who was detained by Azerbaijani police and kept in Interior Ministry Migration Service detention place for migrants, will be extradited to Iran by Baku-Tehran flight on April 12,” the migrant’s representative Alovsat Aliyev told the APA.

He said that Musevi is not allowed appealing to Appeals Court. Aliyev said he tried to meet with Musevi several times.

“I tried to meet with Shovgu Hajiyev, chief of Interior Ministry Migration Service, but in vain. Hadi Musevi’s signing the appeal was also not allowed. If he is extradited to Iran it may damage Azerbaijan’s image. To deport the person who has left the country as a political migrant to the same country contradicts international conventions. It should be taken into account that Musevi will possibly be punished for his activities against Iran,” he said.

Ehsan Zahidov, officer of Interior Ministry press service said that Musevi must be deported from Azerbaijan. He advised to contact Interior Ministry Migration Service. Migration Service said that the reports about Musevi’s deporting to Tehran at 04.00 tomorrow [12 April 2007] are not true.

Musevi was born in 1981 in the city of Keleyber of Iran and arrested for participation on the rally to Bazz Tower in July, 2004 and left the country after having been released.
