Abkhazia: Elections to Be Held Early 2007


On Thursday, the National Assembly scheduled Abkhazia's local government administration elections on 11 February 2007, with parliamentary elections scheduled for 4 March 2007.

Abkhazia's local government administration elections will be held on 11 February 2007, with parliamentary elections scheduled for 4 March 2007.

On Thursday, the National Assembly — Abkhazia's Parliament — agreed on the personal composition of the Central Election Committee. Under the Republic's legislation, the Parliament appoints 8 of the Central Election Committee's 15 members.

The National Assembly was supposed to appoint the candidates to the Central Election Committee on 13 December, however the MPs of the Opposition asked for extra time to discuss the candidates.

Eventually, members of the Central Election Committee as advised by the Parliament were appointed: member of the Sukhum City Council Khukhut Bganba, former Minister of Education Tali Dzhopua, "The Aitaira" movement activist Roman Geriya, President of the College of Lawyers Ivan Zarandiya and a teacher from Tkuarchal Olga Prokopenko. Other members of the Central Election Committee will be Viktor Tvanba, Jon Smyr, Marina Shanava.

Under the legislation, the rest of the Central Election Committee members are to be nominated and approved by the President of the Republic of Abkhazia, Sergey Bagapsh is expected to voice his decision within a week.
