The members of Tibetan Youth Congress who were detained in Delhi's Tihar Jail since June 26 were released in the evening of July 7 after 12 days of detention. They were detained for protesting in and around th premises of the Chinese embassy against the July 1 launch of the Qinghai-Tibet railway that connects Tibet to Chinese capital Beijing.

Residents of Samyeling Tibetan colony also known as Majnu-ka-Tilla organised a reception in honour of the released members of TYC. The gathering was addressed by TYC's General Secretary and Tsultrim Dorjee and Information Secretary about the campaign and its overall success.

Recalling his July 5 meeting with DCP of Parliament Street, Dr. Anand Mohan and ACP Mirvani, Court of Special Executive Magistrate, TYC's Information Secretary Dhondup Dorjee said the police were misinformed by their sources about the presence of more than 100 Tibetans who were planning to stage repeated demonstrations in front of the Chinese embassy which contributed to their decision to hold back the release of the TYC members. He said such misinformation seemed to be deliberately circulated by a section of persons to prolong the detention of the Tibetans.

All the 50 members had staged an indefinite hunger strike while in detention from June 29 but the strike was called off to celebrate H.H. the Dalai Lama's birthday on July 6. Mr. Dorjee said the jail superintendent permitted 2 hours for the celebration during which Mr. Tsultrim Dorjee, General Secretary of TYC briefed the gathering and distributed sweets among the Tibetans and other prisoners. Tibetan butter tea and sweet rice (Dresil) were served among the inmates and staff. Long life prayers for His Holiness was held. Tibetan Traditional dances and folk songs in praise of His Holiness were perfomed.
