Abkhazia: Extension Mandate of UN Mission to Be Discussed

The UN Security Council will adopt a resolution on extension of the mandate of the UN observers mission in the self-acclaimed republic Abkhazia on March 30.

Prime-News was told at the UN representation office in Georgia that according to widespread information, closed meeting of the UN Security Council was held on March 28. The situation in Georgia was discussed at the meeting.

Giorgi Volski, Deputy State Minister of Georgia for conflict resolution, stated that a group of friends of the UN Secretary General, intends to choose and adopt coordinated draft resolution that will be implemented by the parties involved in the conflict.

Volski informed that after adoption of resolution members of the group of friends of the UN Secretary General plan to visit Tbilisi and Sokhumi.

At the present 122 military observers are working in the UN observer’s mission established in Georgia in 1994.

At the same time, the Russian party has blocked participation of Georgian representative in the closed-door session of the UN Security Council on Tuesday, during which situation in Georgian and in particular Abkhazian issue was discussed.

Revaz Adamia, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Permanent Representative of Georgia to the United Nations, stated about that at the press conference in New York.

According to Adamia, he was going to deliver a speech on the current situation in the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict zone, including inactiveness of the Russian peacekeepers and violations in which they had been involved.
