Taiwan's prime minister has resigned, paving the way for a cabinet reshuffle weeks after the party signaled it would take a tougher stand against rival China.

Frank Hsieh, in the ruling pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party, had been in office for less than a year, and was under pressure to step down after the party lost local elections on Dec. 3 to the pro-Chinese Nationalist Party

Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian is likely to make his popular former chief of staff, Su Tseng-Chang, the new prime minister.
