Shan: In Honour of Aung San Suu Kyi and Human Rights Day
A two-day function - "Weaving the Dream for Peace and
Human Rights," will be held in Chiang Mai. According to Salween News Network
(SNN) editor and organizer Wandee Suntivutimetee, the function is being organized
by SNN and allied organizations to mark Human Rights Day, on December 10 and
is aimed at garnering a better understanding of current issues in Burma.
The two day activity, to be held on December on 10 and 11, 2005 at Chiangmai
University Art Museum, includes "60 Years of the Sun behind the Clouds"
a play which will be performed to honour Burma's Nobel Peace Prize winner Daw
Aung San Suu Kyi, currently under house arrest by the junta.
The play will be enacted by Chulalongkorn University's Youth for Peace Advocacy
Group and was performed earlier on Aung San Suu Kyi's 60th birthday, celebrated
at Bangkok's Thammasart University, Thailand, on June 19, 2005.
This apart, there will be a revealing video presentation relating to the "Depayin"
event, which marks the heinous attack on Aung San Suu Kyi and the murder of
members of her party, the NLD on May 30, 2000. This will be screened in the
afternoon of the last day.
Other activities include photo and art exhibitions, display of several ethnic
cultural products, including music videos, books, cultural costumes, and traditional
food among others outside the theatre. Several well-known Burmese and Thai artists,
writers, singers, and composers will exchange their views on Burma.
"For the convenience of the non-Thai participants, there will be direct
interpretation in English, through private ear-phones. We have requested for
donations for renting ear-phones," said a Salween News Network team member.
