Abkhazia: Prime Minister, Alexander Ankvab, Escapes Assassination Attempt


The prime minister of Abkhazia escaped a second assassination attempt in a month when his convoy was fired on by unknown gunmen

An assassination attempt on Abkhazia's Prime Minister Alexander Ankvaba on Friday night was a failure, Secretary of the Abkhaz Security Council Stanislav Lakoba told RIA Novosti on the phone.

According to him, Ankvaba was attacked at 21.50 Moscow time near the village of Achadara (the Sukhumi region), 500 meters away from the site of the first attempt on his life on February 28.

Alexander Ankvaba did not suffer, however, Abkhazia's Hero Roman Geriya, member of the Amtskhara public organization, was wounded. He was taken to the republican hospital.

The Abkhaz law enforcement bodies refused to comment on the incident.
