Crimean Tartars: Creation of Ukrainian Ministry on Crimea

The Ukraine government has announced plans to create a new ministry which deals with Crimean affairs. The discussion was held in talks at Kyiv on Wednesday, 15 July 2014. The Ministry of Crimea will focus its activities in Russian occupied Crimea which was annexed in March of this year.

Below is an article published by Crimean News Agency QHA:

Ukraine plans to create Ministry on Crimea. The creation of the Ministry was discussed at the round table in Kyiv July 15 [Wednesday].

Head of Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov was proposed to head the Ministry.

“I nominate former Ukrainian MP Refat Chubarov for the post. He is young politician, who carries big authority in Crimea. His nominee may be compromise”- Ukrainian political scientist Taras Berezovets said when nominating Chubarov.

Crimean Euromaidan activist Anatoly Kovalsky was also nominated for the post. Both Kovalsky and Chubarov did not attend the round table.

Creation of Ministry of Crimea comes as the region was annexed by Russia in March, following Crimean referendum on peninsula’s status.

On March 21 Russian President Putin signed treaties on Crimea’s unification with Russia, still the move was recognized neither by Kyiv, nor US and EU.
