Crimean Tatars: National Flag Day On June 26


The Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people decided to hold their annual National Flag Day on June 26 this year.

SIMFEROPOL (QHA) - Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people will arrange annual Crimean Tatar National Flag Day on June 26 [2014].

The decision was made at the session of Mejlis on May 29 in Simferopol.

“The Crimean Tatar National Flag Day, an event that is conducted annually on June 26, will be held this year. In set terms, according to Russian laws it is not less than 15 days before the event, we will appeal to authorities and inform about all the measures that are planned to be held.”- head of Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov noted.

To recall, Crimean authorities have banned all the mass events in Crimea from May 16 till June 6. Crimean Tatar annual mourning meeting, commemorating victims of Crimean deportation of 1944 was also banned.

Note: Crimean Tatar national flag was adopted at the Kurultay (Crimean Tatar assembly) in 1917. In June, 1991, the newly-summoned Kurultay confirmed the flag in the form of the blue cloth with the yellow mark of tamga. In 2010, Kurulay declared June 26 national holiday.

Crimean Tatar Flag Day was initiated in 2009 by youth NGO Yashlar Shurasi. The symbol of the event is biggest Crimean Tatar flag (21 meters long), that was presented by head of Crimean Tatar Association in Bursa (Turkey) Adnan Suyen.
