Iraqi regional parliament of Kurdistan on Tuesday [20 May 2014] re-elected the incumbent regional Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani as prime minister and elected his deputy, a regional official said.

"The Parliament of Kurdistan elected Nechirvan Barzani for the post of prime minister of Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), and Qubad Talabani, son of the Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, for the post of deputy prime minister," Rebin Rasol, political advisor for the KRG told Xinhua.

Barzani has been in office since January 2012, and he was re- elected to remain in office after he won the majority support of 99 lawmakers out of 100 lawmakers who were present at the session of the 111-seat parliament in the regional capital of Arbil, some 350 km north of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, while his deputy garnered 78 votes, Rasol said.

According to the regional law, the KRG president Masoud Barzani would have to ask his nephew, the re-elected prime minister, and his deputy to form the next government for the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region in northern Iraq, Rasol added.

In September 2013, the Kurds elected their regional parliament and the results of the voting showed that the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), led by the regional president Masoud Barzani, won 38 seats of the parliament 111 seats.
