An Iraqi Turkmen Front official was gunned down Monday [17 March 2014] in the northern Nineveh province, a lawmaker said.

Zahid Ismail was shot dead by unidentified gunmen outside his home in al-Rashidiya district, Turkmen Front MP Arshad al-Salehi told Anadolu Agency.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the killing. Iraqi authorities have yet to comment on the attack.

Al-Salehi blamed what he described as "foreign plots" for attacks on Turkmen in Iraq. "We are worried that some parties would use these assassinations to impose their military influence on Turkmen areas," he said.

Turkmens are Iraq's third largest ethnic population after Arabs and Kurds.
