Zanzibar: Dutch Government Strengthens Cooperation


The Netherlands and Zanzibar will further cooperation in the future, including the creation of a capacity building fund for Zanzibar at the hand of the Dutch Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation.

President of Zanzibar and Chairman of Revolutionary Government Dr Ali Mohamed Shein has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to work with the government of Netherlands in various sectors to strengthen their cooperation between.


Dr Shein made the remarks yesterday [21-02-2014] when he hosted the Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Ms Lilianne Ploumen at State House,  Zanzibar.

 “Thank you for your strong support to our government. We are eagerly waiting the start the rehabilitation of maternity ward at Mnazi Mmoja Hospital,” Dr. Shein said.

He added that the continued support from the Dutch government signifies the strong partnership that exists between the two countries.

 Dr Shein expressed his appreciation and that of his government to the government of The Netherlands for setting aside a special fund for capacity building for Zanzibar which he described as crucial support in realisation of Zanzibar’s development goals.
 
“We will identify areas needing capacity building and we look forward to a fruitful cooperation in this area,” Dr Shein told Ms Ploumen.

 He showered praise on Ms Ploumen for bringing with her a strong delegation from the private sector which would explore investment opportunities in Zanzibar and said “It is a bright beginning in fostering public/ private partnership between the two countries”.

 “In today’s world private sector is considered as an engine of the economy therefore bringing to Zanzibar 25 Dutch companies is a good beginning,” he  noted.

Meanwhile, the Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Madam Lilianne Ploumen pledged continued assistance to Zanzibar government.

She told the President that her government was proud to have been given opportunity to contribute to the development of Zanzibar through both government to government initiatives (cooperation) and through private sector to private participation in the Zanzibar’s economy. 

She said she was happy to be able to visit Zanzibar following a successful visit to Netherlands of Zanzibar president in August last year.
