Conference on the Rule of Law and "Raison d'état" on February 18-19 (Brussels)

I would like to take this opportunity to invite you and your organization to endorse and support the meeting and, if possible, to participate in person in Brussels. I understand that it is at a very short notice, and that we are all faced with a number of pressing issues, but the themes at the center of the meeting all have relevance to the UNPO mandate and activities.

After having witnessed decades of "real communism", we are now facing an international context where the systematic use of the so-called "Raison d'état", or national interest, has damaged democracies; turning dozens of UN Members States into what could be called "real democracies". The infamous "industrial military complex" has developed an undisputed and tremendous power, which is as structural as it is out of control – just like President Eisenhower professed when he denounced the power of the "Congress' military industrial complex" as the biggest threat to the world and the United States. We now have a clearer idea of thereach of such a power thanks to the revelations of some heroic conscientious objectors such as Mr. Edward Snowden.

The “Raison d’état” is a lethal threat to "Democracies". It is a danger directed against formal Positive Legal Norms and therefore against the Rule of Law and Human Rights. It is also a threat to the "Right to Truth and Knowledge", which is the objective of a reform already initiated at the UN and which we envision as: the "Human Right to Know" what a State does in the name of its own law and legality, and on behalf of the citizens in whose name it rules and sits at the United Nations.

To allow a highly qualified debate, I ask you to endorse, support and help this ambitious event, as a means to foster a profound global Reform of the relationship between the de facto power of the "real democracies" and the existing positive law system based on the UN Human Rights treaties and conventions.

The meeting will be broadcast live. Neither UNPO nor The Nonviolent Radical Party is in a position to support the participation of invitees at this time.

Over the last few weeks, we have been able to secure the endorsement and/or participation of over 50 well-known Institutional and political personalities. More information on the event can be found here. For registration, go here.

I shall look forward to reading from you soon, and thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

With my best wishes,

Marino Busdachin
General Secretary UNPO
