Chin: National Conference Delegates Voted to Amend 2008 Constitution

The delegates of the Chin National Conference, that was held November 12-15, voted to amend the 2008 Constitution, with a view to bringing a genuine federal system to Myanmar.

Below is a press release published by Eleven Myanmar:

The Chin National Conference, held here from Tuesday through Friday last week [November 12-15], ended with delegates voting to amend the 2008 Constitution and bring a genuine federal system to Myanmar, said Salai Ngae Pee, secretary of the Chin National Party.

“Which clauses to be amended in the Constitution are already known—from ordinary people to politicians. Those clauses have also been discussed in detail,” said Salai Ngae Pee, who chaired the conference.

“The conference’s result is aimed at focusing on the Constitutional amendment to change into a genuine federal system. This result will be conveyed to the national-level political dialogue by delegates who will attend the Union-level conference. The Chin social network is drawing up its constitution. All Chin people have decided to amend the 2008 Constitution.”

The conference released a 10-point statement on the establishment of genuine federal system.

The statement said that a federal system must include sovereignty across the entire nation; equity in politics, religion and race; self-administration; a federal-style Union; the protection of ethnic minority privileges; democratic rights; human rights and gender equality; a multi-party democratic system; a country not based on religion; the formation of a Union army; and the right to establish a new state.

In establishing a federal-style Union, as soon as states and regions agree to draw up their particular constitutions, a genuine federal system can be created by amending the 2008 Constitution, according to the conference resolution.
