Abkhazia: Deputy Foreign Ministers Visit Exhumation Site


Deputy Foreign Ministers Oleg Arshba and Irakly Khintba visited the Sight of Exhumation of the Unidentified Remains of People Perished in the 1992-1993 Patriotic War

Today [22 July 2013] the Deputy Foreign Ministers Oleg Arshba and Irakli Khintba have visited the sight of exhumation of unidentified remains of people perished in the 1992-1993 Patriotic War. The Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) [mission to Abkhazia] George Drndarsky met them in the Glory Park and informed them about the work done and the planned events. Drndarsky stressed that all works had been carried out under the personal control of the Prime-Minister L.I. Lakerbaya. “The Government of the Republic of Abkhazia has organized the work in a very effective way”,- Drndarsky noted.

Unidentified remains of 26 people have been exhumed so far. The work on exhumation continues and will take at least one more week. Almost all genetic data of the potential relatives of the perished people has been collected.

The Deputy Foreign Ministers also examined the new laboratory on identification of the remains which will start working after completion of exhumation. They had a discussion with the invited experts from Argentina who work together with their Abkhaz colleagues.

Representatives of the Abkhaz Foreign Ministry noted the importance of these activities and thanked the ICRC for their assistance in this field.
