Abkhazia: Meeting With EU Delegation


The Foreign Minister Viacheslav Chirikba met with the EU delegation to discuss the current and planned projects in the spheres of education, healthcare and agriculture.

On August 30, 2012 the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Abkhazia Viacheslav Chirikba met with the EU delegation represented by the Political Advisor of the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Magdalena Grono, the Project Manager Eva Troy Blanco and the Head of the Political Department Tobias Tyberg. The Deputy Foreign Minister Irakli Khintba also participated in the meeting from the Abkhaz side.

Issues related to the current and planned EU projects in the spheres of education, healthcare and agriculture were discussed at the meeting. In particular, the participants of the meeting discussed methodological support of educational institutions of Abkhazia and involvement of foreign professors in teaching subcources at the Abkhaz State University.

Regarding the healthcare Magdalena Grono mentioned the possibility to invite international experts to Abkhazia in order to organize trainings for the local law enforcement agencies on the work with drug addicts. Beside that the EU would be able to provide technical assistance to Abkhazia in the spheres of maternal and child healthcare.

Regarding the agriculture the EU representatives described potential projects on assisting the local farmers by introduction of the modern technologies.

According to the Minister, in order to improve cooperation between Abkhazia and the EU in terms of humanitarian projects there should be more transparency and awareness.

The possibility to establish the EU Center in Abkhazia in the future was also discussed at the meeting.
