Following on a successful collaboration during the Third UN Forum on Minority Issues, UNPO will once again join with Minority Rights Group in presenting a panel discussion featuring minority representatives alongside the Forum’s fourth annual meeting.

This year’s panel, to be held on the second and final day of the Forum [30 November 2011], will focus on the particular issue of violence against minority women and their access to justice.  The event will allow for an in-depth discussion of this issue alongside the 4th Session of the Forum, which focuses more generally on the theme of guaranteeing the rights of minority women.

Women representing UNPO Member communities will join other minority women on the panel to speak about the experiences of their groups in confronting collective violence, as well as the barriers they face in accessing justice.

In preparation for this event, UNPO has prepared a background paper focusing on the experiences of minority women in situations of conflict and one-sided violence, as well as their involvement (or lack thereof) in peacebuilding initiatives. This paper, released on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, takes the frequently discussed issue of women in conflict one step further in speaking to the particular experiences of minority women in situations of collective violence.
