Below is the Statement Released by MOSOP in commemoration of this day;

10th of May 2010:

The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) today welcomes the election of Mr. Legborsi Saro Pyagbara as the Regional Coordinator for Africa for the Global Network on Extractive Industries and Indigenous Peoples.

MOSOP expresses appreciation to all members of the international network on Extractive Industries and Indigenous Peoples on the development, and also commends Mr. Pyagbara, who is the International Advocacy Officer of the Movement, on his latest achievement, which to us, is an acknowledgement of his commitments to the struggle for justice for the Indigenous Peoples across the globe.

MOSOP’s position on issues of justice and rights of the Indigenous Peoples, as well as its quest for corporate responsibility by operators of the extractive industries have remained consistent, uncompromised, and go beyond the shores of African continent.

This fact can be attested to as the Movement was a co signatory of the Statement of Solidarity to the IP of Peru by the GN of IPs and EI –SPA, and the letter to the Canadian Prime Minister regarding the adoption of the new corporate social responsibility in that country.

MOSOP uses this opportunity to reiterate its call on governments to establish robust mechanisms for transparency in extractive industries operations and make open all the information relating to the extractive sector to the citizens.

Similarly, MOSOP, realizing that most extractive resources are finite, calls for the establishment of Indigenous Community Fund for the continued development of the Mineral bearing indigenous Communities when the resource extraction has ended.

Considering the experiences of the indigenous peoples, the need for a move from the era of corporate social responsibility to the era of corporate liability can not be over emphasized.
