Bougainville: UN Asked for Help to Disarm

The United Nations is processing a request for assistance in providing a weapons disposal program for the government of the autonomous Bougainville province.

The United Nations is processing a request for assistance in providing a weapons disposal program for the government of Papua New Guinea's autonomous Bougainville province.

The chairman of the Ministerial Committee on Law and Order, Ezekiel Massat, says a request has been made to the UN, saying that guns need to be removed from the streets.

However, Mr Massat says there is no need for a regional intervention force such as the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI).

"As long as I remain minister I do not intend to see any RAMSI-like operations in Bougainville," he said.

"I don't think there is room for the engagement with the use of firearms."
